PIP and other help

A PIP award is often a key that opens other help. Some of it follows automatically from the award; some of it needs a separate application to a different body. Nothing on this page is automatic unless it says so.
- Blue Badge. People receiving PIP may qualify for a Blue Badge for parking, decided by the local council. The council applies its own test, so a PIP award does not guarantee a badge.
- Motability Scheme. If you receive the enhanced mobility component and have at least 12 months left on your award, you can exchange some or all of that component to lease a car, scooter, or powered wheelchair through the Motability Scheme.
- Vehicle tax. Depending on the component and rate, you may qualify for a vehicle tax discount or exemption; the vehicle must be registered in the name of the PIP claimant or their nominated driver.
- Disabled Persons Railcard. A Railcard giving a third off most rail fares for the holder and one adult companion.
- Council Tax and local help. Some councils offer Council Tax reductions, local bus discounts, or leisure concessions linked to disability benefits. Ask your own council: these vary by area.
- Carer's Allowance. Someone who cares for a PIP claimant for 35 hours a week or more may be able to claim Carer's Allowance, subject to its own earnings limit — verified from GOV.UK at the time of any future Carer's Allowance build, not stated as a figure here.
- Premiums on other benefits. A PIP award can add premiums to Employment and Support Allowance or Universal Credit in some cases. The amounts and conditions are general only here; the paying benefit's own rules decide.
- Christmas Bonus. The £10 Christmas Bonus is covered on the reviews and changes page.
Other countries, other systems
Northern Ireland runs PIP through the Department for Communities, with the same 2026–27 rates confirmed by nidirect. Scotland uses Adult Disability Payment instead of PIP for new claims — this site does not state its rates, which are set by Social Security Scotland. If you move between nations, tell the paying department before you move: the benefit that follows you depends on where you live and which system you are in.
